SERVING FROM AN OVERLFOW OF GRATITUDE
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thes 5:16-18)
Thankfulness is a common theme throughout the bible. It says: “in everything give thanks…” did we catch that? In everything! That means the fundamental posture the bible calls us to is that of gratitude. Whatever the circumstances! Why is this so vital? Well the underlying reason is of course we are a redeemed and delivered people. We have been transferred from the dominion of darkness into that of His wonderful light (Col 1:13). Apart form God we have no life, no breath, no destiny and no hope! We have been rescued from eternal death. Isn’t that reason enough?
But the psalmist gives us an even more fundamental reason. Psalm 136:1 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.” Gratitude is due, not just because of what He has done but for who He is! He is GOOD. Goodness as seen in the initiative of His inexhaustible grace and mercy to us and in His unconditional love towards us forever! There is no need to second-guess God’s nature. The Bible tells us He is GOOD all the time! Even when we face our darkest moments, believe this truth!
Psalm 28 for example depicts David in trials. He wrote: “Praise to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength …my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song” (Psalm 28:6-7)
What is the power of gratitude? There are two types of believers in the Kingdom. The first thank God only when they are blessed and then go on their merry way and forget. The second lives in a culture of gratitude. You hear them always saying, “Praise God!” and “God is good!” God is the reason for every blessing they get. When the ten lepers were healed, only one returned to say thank you to Jesus. To him, Jesus said: “Arise, go your way: your faith hath made you whole.” (Luke 17:19 KJV). He wasn’t just cleansed of leprosy, he got his missing fingers and toes back! Gratitude has extras!
