YOUR… DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY

“And in the last days,” God declares, “I will pour out my spirit on all flesh. And your sons and daughters shall prophecy….” (Acts 2:17)

Who says women can’t lead? While the culture of most periods limits the role of women in society, God is no respecter of gender norms in culture.  Women prophets had always existed in Israel. Miriam prophesied to the nation and was set before them as a leader by God along with Moses and Aaron (Micah 6:4).  Deborah, was described as ” a wife of Lapidoth…" (Judges 4:4). She freed Israel from the Canaanites through her gutsy leadership. The Hebrew word "wife" is better translated "woman," and since Lapidoth is not attested elsewhere as a man's name but the feminine plural for "fire," we may surmise Deborah was one fiery woman! She appeared in Israel’s history packaged as a judge, prophet and military general; the one who commanded Barak and the army of Israel into battle! That’s one cool Jewish “Mu-Lan” for you!

The prophetess Huldah brought revival to the nation when she prophesied warning to the people and mercy to King Josiah. This occurred during the ministry of Jeremiah, who had been prophesying in Israel for five years by the time the Lord used Huldah to speak His Word. God wasn't out of men to use! He deliberately chose to use this woman! The standing and reputation of Huldah was such that King Josiah sought her first after the discovery of the Book of the Law. Her prophecy was fulfilled. She influenced a whole nation (2 Kings 14: 14-20) when some churches today wouldn’t even allow a woman anywhere near a pulpit to influence their congregation!

When the Holy Spirit fell in the upper room on the day of Pentecost there were men and women there. Remember the women also prophesied! This was in fulfillment of the prophecy that “your sons AND DAUGHTERS shall prophesy” (Joel 2:28-32). For what reason? To show us that the same Holy Spirit is the one who anoints men AND WOMEN to fulfill the great commission (Acts 1:8, Mt 28:19). To do so, women have to teach and reach! Isn’t that obvious? And I haven’t even begun to mention the deeds of women like Esther, Priscilla, Phoebe, Junia, Lois, Eunice and Philip’s daughters yet!
