THE WONDER OF BEING STILL
Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth
We live in a universe where everything is moving relative to everything else. Galaxies, stars and planets are receding from each other at even faster rates as you read this. The expansion is accelerating. Nothing stands still, and there is no fixed point around which everything else revolves. There is patently no eternal constant. Yet in the midst of this, there is one unmovable and uncaused “First Cause”. God simply says that He is! He is the one who has always existed. He alone is our refuge in all circumstances.
This Psalm was written when Israel’s very existence was threatened by enemy forces. The situation would be as dire as when seas roar, or when the mountains are washed into the oceans (v 2-3). That would be a tsunami! At such times human help is futile.
The thrust of this psalm is, don’t wait until things are really bad to seek God. Why do that only when you are in distress? Why not draw from Him daily and have a river flowing through your life at all times (v 4)? I have discovered stillness is a posture more than a location, more a hearing of His voice rather than the absence of noise. It is a cultivated confidence that runs deep. It is anchored in knowing Him, a sure faith that He will help you in your turmoil. Even if help comes only at the break of dawn after a dark night, let a hidden stream run through your life of which only you are aware, a stream that feeds the temple of His presence in you (v 4).
The power of the Lord is such that He can cause wars to cease, bows to be broken and the enemy to be routed (v 8- 9). His might is not just in strengthening our souls, but also in displaying His awesome powers to the nations of the earth! It is in this posture of stillness and knowing Him as God, our unshakeable faith and confidence is formed.
