Mother Teresa once said: “The greatest disease in the world today is loneliness… and the only cure for it is love”. I think she is right. The Beatles once sang: “The lonely people, where do they all come from? The lonely people, where do they all belong?” People think death, disease, hunger, poverty are the greatest enemies. I think loneliness tops them. Why? Because when cancer strikes, it is the loneliness of the journey that chills the soul more than the disease itself. Poverty is tolerable if you are loved and have family, but dying alone in old age is a far more dreaded   enemy.

At Christmas, God came into our cold dark, lonely world to bring the light of His eternal love. Jesus was born in the small village of Bethlehem, so that we will no longer have to be alone anymore. He came to take upon Himself the sins of mankind when He was crucified on the cross, rose again from the dead, to conquer death so that we would not have to taste death and hell anymore. Today, He stands at the door of your heart and knock. Will you let Him in? Because “to all who receive Him who believe in His name, He gives them power to become children of God (John 1:12). He promises: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

What are you facing this Christmas? A life-or-death diagnosis? A family tragedy? A marriage crisis? A personal mountain to climb? The greatest fear in all this, is the sense of being alone with no one who understands you, whom you can talk to, or from whom you can draw strength to overcome the giant in your life. Trust Jesus. Give to Him your problem, your loneliness, your fears, your life and you will experience the miracle of a new birth. I once spent Christmas Day alone in my dingy room as a student in England. Everyone was gone. I had a cold sandwich for dinner. Yet a glow filled my heart and room that night. I never forgot that. And I never feared being alone again. Today, may you know this Overflowing Love that never fails. Blessed Christmas!
