But to all who received Him, who believed in His name,
He gave power to become children of God…
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth;
we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father
(John 1: 12-14, ESV)
When you think of it, it’s a crazy love story. The Christmas story I mean. Why would God be incarnated in the womb of a virgin? Why would He be born in a stable and laid in a manger when the whole of creation is His? You would have thought that at least He would have chosen a royal palace or an aristocratic home to enter the world. And why would He have to flee like a fugitive at the attempts of a furious king (Herod) who was hell-bent on snuffing out his early human existence? He could have commanded legions of angels to His aid. Yet He came in poverty and anonymity that we might be made rich, and that we might become sons and daughters of the living God. It would have been a crazy love story if it weren’t for the fact that it is true! Every bit of it.
God’s love that came down at Christmas in anonymity and displayed on the cross in glory, is the love that truly lasts. It gives without ever giving up. Quite different from the ways in which the world sees love. This Christmas’ play of “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love” is full of scenes as to how love goes missing, or becomes badly warped in the family, in marriages and other relationships. The poignancy of the sketches reveals how needful and broken our world has become, and how far we have strayed from God’s gold standard of what love is!
Come and watch it. Bring your pre-believing friends and family. Pray for them that they will enter into the play so deeply that they identify with the bankruptcy of love in the world and turn to the fountain of love: Jesus Himself! This Christmas pray with us for a mighty harvest. That they might know God’s crazy love.
