Homo Sapiens – Who Are We?

This week I finished reading “Homo Sapiens”. This bestseller traces the evolutionary history of man from the last 70,000 years to the present time. What was man like when he learned to make fire? When he began to think abstract thoughts? When he cultivated crops and lived in bigger communities? What effect did the emergence of language have on people? Professor Yuval Harari contends it allowed the masses to communicate, and identify themselves with common beliefs. This ultimately allowed people to be ruled by kings, giving rise to ancient empires. These land-based empires rose and fell for the past four millennia until science fuelled discoveries of new lands, and created maritime superpowers that controlled empires across seas. Today, empires have been replaced by nations; we live longer, are greedier, and create borrowed wealth by “trusting the future”. We are not necessarily happier. But we rule the earth!

Our species has become the most “successful” on earth. Yet as we enter the digital and technological revolution, all is not well. Species of plants and animals have become extinct because of our greed. We have polluted rivers and oceans. We have the nuclear capability to destroy ourselves. And although world wars are less likely today than a century ago, history tells us we have not been able to overcome the problem of living together. Greed, consumerism, selfishness, pride, curiosity, and the search for ultimate happiness and immortality will be the reasons why we will keep manufacturing more, consuming more, polluting more, and inventing more without any limits in sight.

We are now on the threshold of becoming “gods”, creating new beings through genetic manipulation, and creating cyborgs that out-think, out-perform and out-anticipate us through the artificial intelligence revolution. What direction will it take? Will we destroy ourselves before we even get that far? Maybe. But whatever our starting point, human history has been divided into two eras: BC and AD. At some point, God joined our journey as a Sapien. Why? Divine wisdom knew all along that we could never save ourselves. So divine grace entered history. That’s the true story of Sapiens. We need help.
