…the proconsul, Sergius Paulus…. called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God…. Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
Today, we begin a new series on the impacting the Workplace, in Skyline English. In the Mandarin congregation, next week we start a new series on dealing with occult powers. To impact the workplace, we often have to move in the power of the Spirit, and overcome the occult powers. How? Through the believers’ authority! Let’s take a look and see.
How do we impact our city? It depends at what level we wish to impact. When we influence those at the upper levels of government, policies and laws change. When Paul was in Cyprus, the proconsul of the island, Sergius Paulus, was converted as a result of a spiritual power encounter. He was an educated intelligent man, who was convinced of the truth of the gospel only when he saw Elymas, the medium who advised him, struck blind at Paul’s command! This then, was the apostle Paul’s first ever convert: a high-ranking Roman official from the marketplace!
When Paul was in Philippi (Acts 16), a businesswoman Lydia was converted, followed by a fortune-telling slave girl who was set free from demonic oppression. This resulted in a near riot as her owners dragged Paul and his team to the magistrates, and had them beaten and imprisoned. When we are serious about invading Satan’s turf in the city, we must be ready to face the consequences! God later intervened with an earthquake. As a result, Paul was set free, and the jailer was converted together with his family! Lights came on in the city that day in the textile industry, the slave-traders’ business, and in the prisons of Philippi.
There were other cities Paul impacted in the course of his travels and preaching: Lystra and Derbe (Acts 14), Athens (Acts 17), Corinth (Acts 18), Ephesus (Acts 19) and even Malta (Acts 28). The keys? Pray, Proclaim, Persuade, and the Power of God!
