He who has seen me has seen the Father
John 14:9 NKJV
My son Andrew and I enjoy lame jokes. We look alike, and have very similar slim body-build, meaning we really have to work hard to buff ourselves up. Some even have trouble distinguishing our voices over the phone. We both support Manchester United. We both also have a history of missing flights! I once berated him for missing his flight home from Australia. He had overslept! In the middle of my rather exasperated chiding, he gently reminded me that I had a track record of missed flights too. Ouch! Like father like son!
Jesus spoke often about His Father. He said His Father was in Him, and He was in His Father, and that anyone who had seen Him had seen the Father (John 14:7-11). He wasn’t talking about physical resemblance, but about the nature and the heart of God that was fully manifest in Him (John 1:14, Colossians 1:19). In fact, so united are they that the Son only does what He sees the Father doing, for the Father loves Him and shows Him what He does (John 5:19-20). How deep is the unity? To the point of being of one substance. Jesus said that He and His Father are ONE (John 10:30). What intimacy!
Scripture tells us that God is knowable only by revelation and He has revealed Himself ultimately and fully, through His Son (Hebrews 1:2-3). If we are to know what the nature of our heavenly Father is like, all we have to do is look at Jesus. Gazing upon His Son will in time, transform us through His Spirit to reflect His Glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). This then is especially the call of every father. Imitate Jesus. Follow Him. And you will have the heart of the Father and display His heart to your children. Then shall come to pass the saying that is not only true genetically, but even truer spiritually. Like Father, like son! Happy Father’s Day. Remember you are your kids’ heroes!
