Mum, You’re Beautiful 母亲,您真美丽…

The other day, I had a conversation with my mum over the phone. Well, conversation is not exactly the right word. You see, she’s quite deaf, and most times, she was merely guessing at what I said. But her mind was sharp. And, her voice loud. At eighty-eight, I’ve come to realise she may not have a lot of time left, so I leave lots of text messages for her most days. She reads them on her smart phone but doesn’t know how to reply, so a dialogue still doesn’t happen. I send her photos of myself and the family which makes her really happy, but I get none of hers. Still she’s my mum. Each Mother’s Day, my mind easily zips back over the decades to all the sacrifices she’s made for me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

Remember the lyrics of this moving song? It’s touched lives of millions since its debut twenty years ago. It has inspired Olympic champions, stirred a nation to rise from the ashes after the September 11 tragedy, formed the background music at Nobel Prize ceremonies, and the funerals of celebrities. For me, it summarizes the confluence of the two greatest influence in my life; my mother and also, my God.

Imprinted in the mind of every man and woman is a debt we can never repay to our mums. She sacrificed so that one day, we might stand tall on windswept mountains. They believed in us so in time, we can walk on stormy seas. I remember how the love and attention of my mum kept alive when I nearly died of a perforated appendix as a teenager. Today is a great day to say thank you to our mums and to wish every mother a BLESSED AND HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY. Mums, you’re beautiful!

你扶持我 我能攀越过山岗
你扶持我 穿过暴风巨浪
我很坚强 因能依靠你臂膀
你鼓舞我 让我超乎想象
