THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD

For I am about to do something new… Do you not see it?
I will make a pathway through the wilderness.
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland
Isaiah 43:19

The journey of a thousand miles may begin with the first steps. But the road back to clean, efficient, and just governance in our land is a long and winding one. Don’t get your hopes too high. It’s only the beginning. It’s not even the beginning of the end. There is much to do to correct decades of misgoverning and an invidious culture of entitlement, corruption, and racism that have crept into our nation. The direction that our new PM is charting is commendable and brave, although it was his past tenure that set us on the road to the present purulent culture today. Still, it’s not too late for him to make amends. After all we do believe in the God of the second chance, don’t we?

Since GE-14, the MACC has become the most active agency. Those previously in high office are now being grilled, arrested, and charged. This is a reversal of the MACC’s focus in the past ten years when they pulled in anchovies, but allowed the sharks to roam free. So much corruption has been woven into the price of high-cost projects that everything now needs to be examined again. Critics decry that it’s vindictiveness that’s driving this. But the new Harapan government was elected under a mandate to “clean up”, so I guess they are merely executing their manifesto and “doing their job”. Hopefully, it will be done fairly and transparently, and not descend into witch-hunts.

There is new optimism in our land. But we mustn’t take things for granted! Things could easily head south in a blink of an eye. Mahathir is old, and could suddenly die. Even if he didn’t, smooth succession is not a given. Would Anwar continue with the present policies? Would there be jostling and infighting in the Harapan component parties? Would the coalition still be intact and strong at the next election so that we have a true two-party system in our land? Or would racial and religious politics return to plague our nation again? These are urgent matters for watchfulness and above all for prayer!
