Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments…
For there the LORD commanded the blessing –
Life forevermore (Psalm 133)
I once watched a National Geographic documentary about a herd of wildebeest that stood together against a pride of lions. They were united in thwarting the attack of the big cats upon their weaker members and calves. Attack after attack by the lions, failed to break through their ranks and eventually, these apex predators gave up. I was fascinated. Then I remembered when Israel was attacked, their greatest weapon was unity under clear leadership (2 Chronicles 20); together they praised and thanked God, together they proclaimed His goodness (v 21-23). The enemy was defeated.
Today the Elders are away on retreat. For just this one Sunday, we are covering the church from a “distance” away. We have gone away to reconnect together, to share, to pray, to bond and deepen the friendship that will bring us back stronger in unity for the coming year. This is an important part of how the anointing in the church flows; it is from the top downwards, as like the oil flowing down from the head of Aaron to the beard, and down to the hem of his garment. It is in this wonderful unity that God gives to us that will protect and power us into the new year. Before we are elders together, we must be spiritually strong, gracious and accountable friends first!
So pray for us that we will return refreshed, re-filled and re-bonded. For from there, the Lord will command His blessings upon this church. Life forevermore!
